Exhaust oxygen sensors are used in most gasoline-powered vehicles in the engine fuel control feedback loop. its main job is to control and optimize the air and fuel mixture coming into the engine. A car’s computer uses the information from it to create a balance in the fuel mixture, so that the vehicle will not be running either too lean or too rich. they are mostly Nerst-type electrochemical cells using a cup-shared zirconia oxide solid electrolyte ceramic sensing element.

How Exhaust Oxygen Sensor works?

Exhaust oxygen sensors produce a voltage signal that measures the amount of oxygen in the exhaust stream of a vehicle. Exhaust oxygen sensor, based on its design, is a battery that generates its own voltage. There is an element in its tip that produces a voltage which varies according to the quantity of oxygen in the exhaust compared to the oxygen level in the air outside the vehicle. The greater the difference in these volumes, the higher the its output voltage. A point worth noting is that the output voltages from Exhaust oxygen sensors don’t remain constant.


When this Device Becomes Faulty

As stated earlier, good Exhaust oxygen sensors should produce a fluctuating signal. This signal changes, automatically and immediately, in response to changes in the amount of oxygen in the exhaust. A good Exhaust oxygen sensor’s signal changes from lean to rich in about once per second. Anything lower than this, it is getting weak and should be replaced. Also, the normal life span of Exhaust oxygen sensor is 30,000 to 50,000 miles, but they may become faulty prematurely if they become blocked with carbon due to faulty spark plug, or are contaminated by lead from leaded gasoline or silicone from an antifreeze leak. If it becomes weak, it can create hesitation during sudden acceleration, affects the car’s converter, and pollutes the environment with the exhaust producing black smoke.

Types of Exhaust Oxygen Sensors

Aside from the Nerst-type electrochemical cells Exhaust Oxygen sensors, there are various types of Exhaust oxygen sensors based on their designs. Amongst them is the Stoichiometric air/fuel Exhaust oxygen sensor, which is designed in the form of a thimble placed on a spark plug shell. Another type is the Exhaust oxygen sensor built with heater inside it. This type of Exhaust Oxygen Sensors is more effective in controlling the gas to air ratio after start-up, because the heater makes the sensor element get to its active temperature at a lesser time. There is also the resistive-type titanium dioxide Exhaust oxygen sensor. This comprises of either a thick-film on an insulating substrate or porous ceramic material. This type of it also makes use of a heater or a thermistor.
